Vase of Flowers, Auvers-sur-Oise 1890

Influence of Japanese art

Van Gogh came to Auvers-sur-Oise, a little village around 30 kilometers from Paris, on May 20, 1890, where he stayed under the care of Doctor Paul Cachet. "Auvers is very pretty", he wrote to Theo, "there is countryside all around, typical and picturesque". Auvers was an artists' village, where painters such as Armand Guillaumin, Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne had already worked.

Vincent and Theo had a considerable collection of Japanese prints, and the influences of Japanese art are clearly visible in this decorative floral piece. The close-up of the flowers is typically Japanese, as are the asymmetric composition and the lack of depth. The photo on the left is taken in the Van Gogh Museum.

Surface off-white

Canvas and ground

Vincent used the standard, machine-made, finely woven linen (portrait linen). For this painting he used a surface so called 'off-white' (normal in those days), with white, carmine, some black and traces of light-yellow and gives an off-white tint.

We made the window as Vincent worked on in Auvers-sur-Oise. High quality materials and the same 'off-white' surface.

And off-course antique spikes on the side !

Composition and drawing

Composition

In Auvers-sur-Oise Vincent made in 60 days, 90 paintings. He had not the time to use the perspective frame, as he mostley did. He experimented with the composition of his Sunflowers and Irises (click on the text to enlarge). It was rainy, otherwise he would have made his about 2 paintings a day outside.

Vincent has again chosen for a center (C) in his composition, just always around the middle of the painting. And he marked it with a highlight (here a white flower). He placed the flowers to diagonals. And the dark line below was again crooked. Then he searched, to get depth in his painting, for strong vertical lines near that center and less strong vertical lines, to get the right depth in the painting. See the photo on the left. With this composition he catches the eye of the visitor.

The painting consists vigorous brushstrokes. The varied application of the paint is noteworthy. At several points between the flowers the structure of the bare canvas can even be seen.

Drawing

In that period Vincent drew with local colors. He preferred that above charcoal. In this case he did something un-useful. First he made a green underground. Made from Chrome lemon and Prussian blue and mixed with grey. The "old Dutch method!!". And he drew the vase and the line, you see on the left. In the area of the vase he kept the surface open. That was all. He had not the time to make a nice drawing, he had to make 2 paintings a day.

Paint and his colors

His colors

On the left you find all the colors Van Gogh used.
On the page about his art techniques we describe them all.

But for a painting in particular he used only some tubes, never all. In this case only 5. Vincent was looking for the exact right colors he saw!
That was one of his secrets. To paint what he saw, no more, no less.

For this great painting Vase of Flowers he used Chrome lemon, Prussian blue (the green was made from this yellow and blue) Geranium, Vandyck brown, Lead white. And the "old-masters grey" was made from white, some Vandyck brown, Geranium and Prussian blue.

As medium he used oil. I use acrylic. You will not see the difference and it is more safe for your painting!

Center

Let's make the painting as Vincent did

The Vase of Flowers was made in one rush in a rapid application of paint crossing the center. Vincent was attempting to create harmony both by intensifying of the colors themselves and by arranging them in their complementary and simultaneous contrasts. His painting is in great harmony and is very powerful. A chique painting from Auvers-sur-Oise.

The reproduction is made on painter's linen, stretched on a wooden window. Size : Size : 26,5 x 41,0 cm ( 11 x 16 inch )
