On his painting excursions to the northwest suburbs of Paris, Van Gogh often painted the Seine near Asnières with the Ile de la Grande Jatte. Vincent’s Paris period coincided with a time when the Pointillist painter Georges Seurat was one of the leading figures of the avant-garde. Van Gogh adopted these new techniques, but gave them his own individual stamp.

Pork-Butcher's shop seen from a window

In May 1888 Van Gogh rented four rooms in a house on Place Lamartine in Arles. The yellow house. The house had to refurbished and furnished before Van Gogh could eventually move in, in September 1888. Until this time the artist used the premises as a studio. Shortly after he had taken up residence, Van Gogh made his famous painting Pork-Butcher's Shop Seen from a Window. Made after a sketch he brought from Paris.

I cannot see any difference with the original one in the Van Gogh Museum.

Here Van Gogh stresses the rustic charm of the area, showing people working in their allotments. Nonetheless, modern development looms: to the left of the smaller mill, a large apartment building rises above the fields.

Restaurant at Asnières

Oil on Canvas, 18.5 X 27 cm and 30 X 44 cm (about twice the size)

This is a simple composition painted in a limited range of summer colors. The green of the shutters returns in the plant-containers, and the yellow wall gives way to the yellow of the paving. There is no shade: this is the middle of the day. There is no trace of an inscription or sign, but the door and also the plants and the outside table all suggest this may be a restaurant.
